Evaluation and Management of Adults with Vision Impairment

A program for Occupational Therapy Professionals

Program Description: A day-long program designed to improve the quality and effectiveness of rehabilitation services provided to patients with vision impairment. The training will demonstrate how to incorporate low vision techniques and devices into your practice. Includes case studies, interactive exercises and activities with optical devices. OTs will receive .6 AOTA continuing education units for their participation.*

Objectives

  • Raise awareness of common eye conditions and eye diseases, their medical and functional implications and how each impacts the treatment plan and provision of care.
  • Increase understanding of the emotional, behavioral and social impact of vision loss and how low vision can affect a person's ability to perform activities of daily living and their acceptance of services and interventions.
  • Learn how to more effectively interact and communicate with a person with vision loss.
  • Become aware of orientation and mobility and environmental considerations that can promote safety and maximize independence for a person with vision loss.
  • Learn to do a functional assessment of a person with vision impairment.
  • Understand the theory, use and application of low vision optical devices.
  • Learn about other low vision techniques and devices available for patients with vision impairment and how to incorporate them into a patient's individual plan of treatment.

Faculty

Occupational Therapist, Optometrist, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, Environmental Access Specialist.

Instructional materials

Each participant will receive a packet of resource materials which will support and enhance the training provided.

Registration

The fee for the SightCare Training Workshop is $110 for each participant, $95 for AOTA members. Agencies may register 5 or more participants for $80 a person. Registration ends Friday, October 26. Space limited to 50 people. Lunch provided.
