GBDS is a non-profit community-based health agency, created in 1957 and dedicated to promoting the well-being of people with diabetes.
Our mission is to raise awareness on how to prevent diabetes for those at greatest risk, and control the disease for those already afflicted.
What We Do
- Project Nuwave - an innovative program that combats the escalation of Type 2 diabetes among children. The program delivers unique and targeted health education to elementary school age children in low-income and high risk communities. In a fun and interactive way, children learn about the link between obesity and diabetes, and are taught some simple and effective ways to reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes through good nutrition, exercise, and weight control.
- SightCare Community Diabetes Education - offers adults information and education about diabetes and diabetes related services. Trained clinicians provide interactive workshops at community based service locations and housing sites. Programs are targeted toward at-risk, low-income and minority adults, and educate participants about all aspects of the disease: prevention, detection, management and complications.
