Greater Boston Guild for the Blind (GBGB) is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency located at 1980 Centre Street in West Roxbury. GBGB offers programs and services specifically designed to provide blind and visually impaired people with help and support that will enhance their physical, emotional and intellectual functioning. These essential services help our clients to live as productively and independently as possible while remaining safe in their own homes.
Since its founding in 1912, GBGB has been a leading provider of programs and services to people with vision loss throughout the Greater Boston area. In 2003, the agency became a subsidiary of The Jewish Guild for the Blind, one of the nation's foremost vision care agencies. In 2006, GBGB's mission and services were further expanded through the addition of the Greater Boston Diabetes Society as a GBGB subsidiary.
What We Do
- Adult Day Health Services - The GuildCare Adult Day Health program provides vision-impaired clients, many of whom have chronic medical conditions, with comprehensive health care, vision services, social services, therapeutic activities, nutrition counseling, a hot meal and more. Door-to-door transportation is included.
- Diabetes Education - A diabetes nurse educator provides community-based workshops, basic screenings, and individual instruction to raise awareness about vision loss as a complication of diabetes.
- Low Vision Examinations - Our low vision clinic offers comprehensive examinations by optometrists from the New England College of Optometry who specialize in low vision care.
- Rehabilitation - Center-based and in-home services provide vision rehabilitation and training to restore or improve independent functioning and increase safety in activities of daily living.
- Adaptive Computer Training - Group and individual instruction in the use of adaptive computer equipment and software is available for visually impaired and blind persons at our Technology Center. Instruction and ongoing support is provided by a trained adaptive technology specialist.
- Vision Loss Education - The SightCare Vision Loss Information, Education and Training program offers education and training to persons who have, or who are at risk of having vision loss. The program includes caregivers and is designed to promote independence and safety.
