The Harriet and Robert Heilbrunn Guild School is nonsectarian and serves students aged five through 21 who are blind, visually impaired and have additional disabilities. These are students whose needs cannot be met within the public school system. The goal of The Guild School is to maximize the independence of each student through a curriculum designed to develop skills and abilities. The School enables its students to more fully participate as contributing members of their families and communities.

Transition
The curriculum for students aged 14 through 21 focuses on the transition from school to adult life. It provides:
- Person-centered planning
- Work internships in the community
- Community-based activities
- Post-school placement services
Family Involvement
Family involvement is the key component to a student's success. Staff members work closely with parents to:
- Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs);
- Provide individualized support services; and
- Ensure parent-teacher collaboration.
Referrals
The Guild School is licensed by the New York State Department of Education. Students are referred by the New York City Board of Education's Committees on Special Education (CSEs). Students who attend the program live in the five boroughs of New York City and throughout the metropolitan area. To qualify, a student must be:
- Blind, visually impaired or deaf blind and have additional disabilities; and
- Between the ages of five and 21.
